VERMILLION COUNTY, INDIANA

 

 

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

 

            Vermillion County is bordered on the north by Interstate Highway 74,

Indiana Highway 63 (4-lane, limited access) bi-sects the county north-south and is a direct route between the Evansville area and Chicago.  Indiana Highway 36 runs east and west through Vermillion County.  Interstate Highway 70 is just 15 miles south.

 

 

          CSX Railroad serves Vermillion County, and several industrial sites

have access to rail.

 

 

          There is a privately-owned public-use airport in Vermillion County.

In addition, Hulman Regional Airport in Terre Haute is approximately 15 miles south of Clinton, and Indianapolis International Airport is less than 100 miles from Vermillion County.

ELECTRIC

 

          Electric service is supplied by Duke Energy, Clinton, Indiana, 47842.

Special individual rates are available; however, additional information is

NATURAL GAS

 

          Vectren Energy, Lafayette, Indiana supplies natural gas to the area. 

Negotiated rates are available according to each specific case.  Connection charges are determined according to usage.

WATER

 

          Clinton Water Utility is capable of supplying 3,000,000 GPD (904,000 GPD potable is now supplied the Clinton service area).  In addition, a large aquifer (375 ft. to bedrock) runs through Vermillion County.  Eli Lilly Clinton Labs can pump more than 1.2 MGD per day from their wells, and the aquifer can supply more than 32 MGD.

 

SEWER

 

          Clinton Waste Water Treatment Facility has a design capacity of 1MGD with current dry weather flow of 480,000 GPD.

 

          Cayuga Waste Water Treatment Facility has a design capacity of 101,000 GPD - with anticipated flow of 80,800 GPD. 

 

 

 

POPULATION

 

          The population of Vermillion County is 16,788; 48.1 % male, 51.9%

female.  The median age is 40 years with an average age of 39.4 years.

Eighty one (81.2%) percent of the population are high school graduates and 11.2% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

 

          The median household income is $38,172 per year; with a total of

6,762 households.

 

WORK FORCE

 

          The total labor force numbers 7,713with an unemployment rate of 11.6% (November, 2009) which is 2.3% over the State of Indiana  unemployment figure for the same period.

 

          Vermillion County draws work force from Fountain County, Parke County, Vigo County, Clay County, Warren County, and from Illinois.  Therefore, the available work force is adequate for most needs.  The total work force for the surrounding Indiana counties is 168,000 with approximately 6,500 of that number unemployed.  In addition, as shown in the Verification of the Southwest Indiana Area Workforce performed by The Pathfinders in 2004 more than 32,000 people in the area qualify as underemployed.

         

            As Vermillion County is largely agricultural, there is an excellent work ethic.  There have been no labor disputes in Vermillion County in the

past fifteen years.

 

 

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

 

          Four major educational institutions are within 15 minutes of Vermillion County;
Indiana State University; St. Mary-of-the-Woods (women's college); Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (one of the nation's premier engineering schools); and Ivy Tech College (technical school).  Ivy Tech in particular has been active in developing training curricula for industry.  Indiana State University's Small Business Development Center provides management consultant services to business and industry.

 

          Parke-Vermillion Community Education and Employment Corporation is a unique resource.  PVCEEC can provide training tailored to the employer's specific needs.

 

 

TAXES

 

          The property tax rate for 2008(payable 2009) is $3.1774 per hundred dollars assessed valuation (Helt Township) and $3.3168 per hundred dollars assessed valuation (Clinton Township).

 

 

INCENTIVES

 

          Property tax abatement may be requested on improvements and new

equipment.

 

            Tax Increment Financing (TIF)

 

          T-2016 training grants are available from the State of Indiana.

 

          Other incentives will be considered on an individual basis.
